MEDIEVAL
FROM THE
DARK
AGES
TO RENAISSANCE
Activities
|
COSTUME
& LIFESTYLE:
Participants are encouraged to try on medieval
clothing to aid understanding of cultural and class differences
and the varying roles required to make a functional medieval
society. The
raw materials and technology of clothing construction is explored
along with aspects of everyday medieval life and society.
|
ARMS
& ARMOUR:
A hands on approach to the military aspect of the medieval period.
Students participate in several activities used to demonstrate the
changes in technology as well as the social aspects such as
knighthood. Interaction between radically different cultures is
explored via the crusades and the changes engendered in terms of
societal attitude and technology. Students can volunteer to try on
armour and helmets or handle various objects and pieces of
equipment. The session is concluded with an activity requiring the
whole class to become members of a shield wall to encourage team work
and an understanding of early medieval tactics as used at the Battle
of Hastings. |
MUSIC
& DANCE:
Re-constructed medieval music face to face. A
variety of vocal and instrumental music is used to display a wide
array of medieval instruments and to give participants a sample of
various languages, rhythms and themes common to medieval Europe.
Volunteers are encouraged to sound trumpets or provide a simple rhythm
on drums to assist with the dances. Students are taught two simple
and fun dances to help put people in their
ancestors' shoes.
|
ARCHERY:

our presenters, the role of archery both in war and sport are
explored.
